Mesothelioma Can Affect Different Areas of the Body

Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that can be generally broken down into three main types, with each affecting a different area of the body. The mesothelium is the protective layer of tissue that surrounds most of the body’s internal organs. Mesothelioma most commonly is diagnosed in the areas surrounding the lungs, heart, and abdomen.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with any form of mesothelioma, you may have important legal rights. If your cancer was caused by exposure to asbestos either at work or at another location, you may be entitled to financial compensation from your employer or another responsible party. Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is cancer of the pleura, the protective mesothelium that encases the lungs. It most often is caused by inhalation of toxic asbestos fibers, which cause irritation in the tissue around the lungs and eventually allows the growth of cancerous cells. Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, accounting for approximately 65 to 70 percent of all cases of the cancer.

Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

  • Lower back or chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Weight loss
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Chronic coughing
  • Difficulty swallowing food
  • Fever and sweating
  • Coughing up blood
  • Hoarseness

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Cancer of the protective tissue around the abdominal cavity is called peritoneal mesothelioma. The cancer can spread quickly and undetected to other internal organs, most commonly the liver. This form of mesothelioma is very rare, comprising less than 30% of all mesothelioma cases. It may be caused by either inhaling or ingesting (swallowing) toxic asbestos fibers.

The symptoms commonly associated with peritoneal mesothelioma include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal mass
  • Abdominal distention / swelling
  • Fluid retention in the abdomen
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Anemia
  • Digestive Complications
  • Bowel Obstruction

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is cancer of the pericardium, the protective mesothelium surrounding the heart. It is the least common of all forms of mesothelioma and can result in life-threatening tumors and accumulation of fluid around the heart.

The symptoms most associated with pericardial mesothelioma include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Abnormal heart beat / heart palpitations
  • Chronic coughing
  • Coughing up blood
  • Hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
